[Yanolja Research Insights] Vol.18 Regarding Coexistence in the Tourism Platform Industry

The tourism industry is undergoing a digital transformation, with platforms playing a pivotal role in shaping new business opportunities and consumer experiences. Here are the essential insights on how coexistence among all participants is driving a healthier, more sustainable ecosystem.

The Expanding Role of Platforms in Tourism

  • Digital platforms are now central to every stage of the travel journey—from inspiration and booking to post-trip feedback. This shift is replacing traditional offline transactions with seamless, personalized online experiences.
  • Consumer needs are diversifying. Travelers increasingly seek unique, experience-driven journeys that reflect personal values and preferences. Platforms help operators quickly identify and respond to these evolving demands.

Benefits for All Participants

  • Business opportunities are growing. Platforms break down geographical barriers, allowing providers to reach new customers and expand their offerings. Real-time feedback and data analytics support better decision-making and customer service.
  • Consumers enjoy greater convenience and choice, with access to a wide range of services and information at their fingertips.

Challenges and the Need for Fairness

  • Market dominance by global platforms is increasing, raising concerns about fair competition, regulatory equity, and the responsibilities of international versus local players. Local platforms are encouraged to strengthen their competitiveness and commitment to shared growth.
  • Unfair practices and monopolistic behaviors—such as excessive fees or restrictive policies—can harm both suppliers and consumers. A balanced approach is essential to ensure long-term industry health.

Maximizing Social Welfare Through Healthy Competition

  • A competitive, expanding platform ecosystem delivers the greatest benefits for all stakeholders. When platforms, suppliers, and consumers grow together, overall social welfare increases.
  • Excessive focus on platform profits can undermine sustainability. Long-term success depends on shared value creation and mutual growth.

The Platform’s Role in Fostering Coexistence

  • Building a healthy ecosystem: Platforms must lead in creating an environment where all participants thrive. This includes fair fee structures and open competition.
  • Sharing information and knowledge: By leveraging their data and insights, platforms can empower both suppliers and consumers, supporting better decisions and innovation.
  • Supporting supplier competence: Training, consulting, and operational support help partners grow and adapt in a rapidly changing market.
  • Creating quality jobs: The rise of digital platforms is generating new employment opportunities and improving job quality within the tourism sector.
  • Pursuing social value: Platforms are encouraged to balance economic gains with social contributions, such as supporting local communities and promoting responsible business practices.
