[Yanolja Research Insights Vol. 39] South Korea’s Medical and Wellness Tourism

The global tourism landscape is evolving, and South Korea is at the forefront of a major transition. We are moving beyond simple sightseeing toward a comprehensive "experience" that merges health with travel.
Based on recent insights from Yanolja Research, here is an overview of how the K-MediWell Model is set to redefine the industry.

1. The Global Shift: From Treatment to Experience

the global healthcare tourism sector is currently one of the fastest-growing industries. The traditional boundary between medical care and wellness is fading. Today, these are integrated into a single value chain that covers prevention, treatment, and long-term management.

2. A Historic Peak for Korea

South Korea's medical tourism market is experiencing rapid structural growth.  the number of international patients visiting the country reached a record high of 1.17 million in 2024. This milestone confirms Korea's status as a central provider in the global market.

3. Addressing the "Hidden Challenges"

Despite this growth, three major areas of concentration continue to pose challenges to sustainable expansion:

  • Specialty Concentration: 68% of patients are focused solely on dermatology and plastic surgery.

  • Geographic Concentration: 85.4% of visits are clustered in Seoul (specifically Gangnam, Seocho, and Myeongdong).

  • Nationality Concentration: More than 60% of patients come from just three countries: Japan, China, and the U.S.

4. Introducing the K-MediWell Model

To overcome these limits, a paradigm shift is necessary.

The K-MediWell model proposes a seamless, full-cycle experience.

It integrates Prevention (Wellness) → Treatment (Medical) → Management (Wellness).

5. Four Strategic Pillars for the Future

To build a sustainable, high-value ecosystem, let's look at the four key strategic directions:

  • Precision Targeting: Better customer and product strategies through selection and linkage.

  • Integrated Platforms: Moving from a fragmented distribution ecosystem to a unified platform.

  • National Branding: Establishing "K-MediWell" as a globally recognized national brand.

  • Sustainable Ecosystems: Creating a long-term strategy for medical and wellness tourism.
